In the wake of the devastating tornadoes that ripped through Oklahoma yesterday, and in north Texas last week, Better Business Bureau and BBB Wise Giving Alliance have issued tips to help donors make smart giving decisions and to avoid scams.

March 14, 2013 Jacksonville, FL - BBB serving Northeast Florida & the Southeast Atlantic has received numerous calls from consumers in our region who have been contacted by individuals claim to need to verify information for a medical card. The callers claim this card will be an additional card that all seniors will be receiving. The caller asks consumers for standard verifying information such as name and address, then asks consumers for banking information.
The BBB advises that you not give out any personal information over the phone. Medicare does not make phone calls regarding new cards, and has issued several alerts regarding scams like these in the past. If you have any questions you can go to medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE. If you feel you have been a victim of this scam contact your bank and the credit reporting agencies immediately.

May 1, 2013-Jacksonville, FL BBB Serving Northeast Florida & the Southeast Atlantic is warning consumers about a local used car dealer and repair shop Motormaxx, which also does business as Ocean Auto Sales and Easy Auto Repair & Towing, LLC.
The BBB Business Review for this business alerts consumers of their F rating with the BBB. In the past three years (the BBB reporting period) Motormaxx and its various dba’s have been the subject of 36 complaints, with 25 of those having occurred in the past year. Motormaxx has failed to respond to all 36 complaints processed by the BBB. The majority of the complaints allege “Problems with Product or Service”, with the secondary issues being with “Billing or Collection Issues”.
Easy Auto Repair and Towing, LLC advertises free towing if repairs are performed at their shop without disclosing the diagnostic fees to the consumers up front. Complainants allege that repairs performed on vehicles are faulty or not performed at all. Complain

April 26, 2013- Jacksonville, FL BBB Serving Northeast Florida & the Southeast Atlantic has received several calls from concerned consumers who have unexpectedly received checks from a Rust Consulting. According to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the U.S. Department of the Treasury these are legitimate checks that have been sent to borrowers whose homes were in any stage of the foreclosure process in 2009 or 2010 and whose mortgages were serviced by one of the following companies, their affiliates, or subsidiaries: Aurora, Bank of America, Citibank, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JPMorgan Chase, Metlife Bank, Morgan Stanley, PNC, Sovereign, SunTrust, U.S.Bank, and Wells Fargo.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency suggests borrowers with questions regarding payments should contact the Paying Agent-Rust Consulting, Inc at 1-888-952-9105.

April 17, 2013-The BBB serving Northeast Florida and The Southeast Atlantic has received multiple inquiries about a company calling itself Overstock Clearance Center. The company website, www.overstockclearancecenter.com claims to sell generators, fitness equipment and children’s play sets at deeply discounted prices. Inquirers state that they have responded to craigslist ads and then are directed to the company website. The website advertises that the company is a BBB Accredited Business and that they have an A+ rating with the BBB, both of which are untruths.
The company requires that payments to be made through Green Dot MoneyPak or Google checkout, which gives consumers no recourse in the case that no goods are received. There is no address listed on the website although they claim to ship from Brunswick, Georgia. March 14, 2013- BBB Serving Northeast Florida & the Southeast Atlantic has been alerted that a local Accredited Business has become an apparent victim of ID theft. Company President, Scott Marion contacted BBB to let us know scammers are purportedly calling consumers saying they represent his company All N One Check Advance informing consumers that they have been approved for a loan. They then ask for an advance fee for the loan to be loaded onto a prepaid Visa card. Once the consumers give the information on the Visa gift card to the scammers, the money loaded onto the card is gone and no loan is given. When trying to contact the phone numbers that the scammers have contacted consumers from, an automated message is given letting consumers know that the number is not accepting phone calls.
